The Offbeat destinations of Assam:

 

Sibsagar:

About 363 kms from Guwahati , Sibsagar is situated close to the site of CHARAIADEO the ancient capital of the Ahom Kings (1229 AD) who ruled for 6 centuries. In time their weakened position gave British the advantage to wrest their kingdom in 1826.A large water tank established by Queen Madambika in 1734 AD dominates the city. Strung around it are three temples, the most important of which is the Shivadoi (Possibly the tallest Shiv temple in the country).

Charaiadeo 28 kms away has a number of burial vaults of kings nobleman and has a striking resemblance to Egypts pyramids.  Other notable places of attractions are Gargaon 15th century, Talatal Ghar associated with king.

 

Nameri:

Nameri national Park is the 3rd park of Assamadjoing with Arunachal Pradesh located in a picturesque setting with many river crisscrossing like Bhoroli and its tributaries namely Diji, Dinai, Dongurung, Nameri, Dikorai, Kharie etc. Nameri is extremely rich in flora and fauna due to abundance of easy prey both wild and domesticated . Its most important avian residents are the White –winged duck . A sizeable population is known to effect the forest pools here and they form the important core of the Indian population of the remaining 150 odd  pairs of this highly endangered species. Other key birds are White Chiked Patridge, Great, Wreathed and Rufous –nected hornbills, Ruddy, Blue erred and Oriental Dwarf kingfisher, Oriental Hobby, Amur Falcon, Jerdon’s and Black Baza, Pallas, Grey –headed and lesser Fishe eagles, Silver –backed needletail, Mountain imperial pigeon, Blue naped pitta, Slender-billed orion, Hill blue flycathcher, Shite crowned forktail, Sultan Tit, Black belied tern, Jerdon’s Babbler< Rufous –backed Sibia, yellow belied flowerpecker, Red throated Pipit, Long-billed plover, and Ibisbill.

 

Haflong:

This is the only hill station, Haflong is 325 kms from Guwahati. Its picturesque  un-spoilt environs are perfect for extended stays. Jatinga close by is reputed for the bizarre Phenomenon of the annual mass suicide by birds. No answer have been found to this mystery till date.

 

Majuli:

Best approached from Jorhat Majuli is the world’s largest inhabited riverine Island. It is also the focal point of Vaishnava culture and is renowned for Vaishanava monasteries. It is home to the missing tribe who migrated from Arunachal Pradesh. They are Assam’s only reverine Island  tribal community and they make some astounding beautiful shawls and blankets which are also used as wall hangings. 

Day 01: Guwahati

Arrive at Guwahati airport and check into the hotel. In the evening take a ferry to visit the Umananda Temple.

Day 02: Guwahati – Nameri National Park

After breakfast commence on a 5 hour drive to Nameri. After lunch go for a walk in the forest along with a qualified naturalist.

Nameri lies in the foothills of the Eastern Himalaya, bordering with the Pake Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh at its North Eastern side. Most part of the park is hilly with altitudes ranging from 80 meters along the river banks to 225 meters. Bird life is varied and abundant with nearly 400 species. It is a birder’s paradise with a sizeable population of White-winged Ducks, White-cheeked Partridge, Great, Wreathed, and Rufous-necked Hornbills, Ruddy, Blue-eared, and Oriental Dwarf Kingfishers, Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker, Red-throated Pipit, Long-billed Plover and Ibisbill.

Overnight at Nameri Eco camp.

 

Day 03: Nameri – Kaziranga

In the morning go for a hike into the forest to observe the rich bird life. After breakfast go on a rafting trip on the Nameri river. Post lunch leave for Kaziranga.

Day 04: Kaziranga National Park

Post breakfast go on a safari to the Central range of the park. In the evening go for a safari to the Western range.

Circumscribed by the mighty Brahmaputra towards the North and East, and by the Mora Diphlu in the South, Kaziranga National Park is home to the largest population of the Great One Horned Rhinoceros in the world. Several other herbivores like the Wild Asiatic Water Buffalo, Eastern Swamp Deer, Hog Deer and Wild Boars are found in plentiful.

 

Day 05: Kaziranga to Majuli

Early in the morning go off an elephant safari and later leave for Majuli island.

Overnight at a bamboo cottage in Majuli Island.

 

Day 06: Majauli

Majuli, one of the largest river islands in the world, is a storehouse of art and culture. Besides culture, Majuli is also a hotspot for birders with many migratory birds favoring its wetland ecosystem. Many species like the Spot Billed Pelican, Greater and Lesser Adjutant Stork, Open Billed Stork, Purple Heron, Whistling Teal, Ruddy Shelduck can be seen in plentiful.

In the morning visit some of the Satras getting an opportunity to see the Satriya dance. Later proceed to the mask making and pottery village.

Overnight at a Bamboo cottage in Majuli.

 

Day 07: Majuli Island to Guwahati

Start early morning for the 7 hour drive to Guwahati. Overnight at a hotel in Guwahati.

 

Day 08: Guwahati

Leave for Guwahati airport in time for your connecting flight.

Traveling Tips for Assam

  • Plan the trip during the winter or autumn season. Summer is very humid and should be usually avoided.
  • The travel tickets, hotels or lodges should be booked and confirmed beforehand, so as to avoid any confusion later.
  • Carry traveler’s cheques, instead of cash. This is a safer option while travelling in crowded areas.
  • Drinks from strangers should be avoided. In fact, if possible, carry your own drinking water.
  • Never forget to lock your luggage and your hotel room door, before going out for shopping or touring.
  • Do not open the door of your hotel room to strangers and enquire properly before letting anyone in.
  • It is advisable not to stay out after dark and especially in areas that are isolated or secluded.
  • Wear proper clothes for the area where you are visiting. It is better to avoid wearing too revealing or skimpy attires.
  • It is always preferable to take the commuting vehicle, like taxis or autos, from prepaid stands and that too after negotiating the fare.
  • If you have any valuable articles or important documents, it is better to deposit them in the safe deposit box of the hotel.
  • If you have to take any touring trip at some distance from the center of the city, it is always preferable to move with other tourists in a group
